Joss House Bay Tin Hau Festival

Joss House Bay Tin Hau Festival (大廟灣天后誕)

Event: Joss House Bay Tin Hau Festival (大廟灣天后誕)
Place: Joss House Bay (Tai Miu Wan), Sai Kung, New Territories
Date: 9 May, 2007
Equipment: Canon 30D, Canon EF 24 - 105 mm F4.0L, B+W CPL

On 9 May 2007, Hong Kong celebrates the birthday of Tin Hau, also known as the Queen of Heaven and Goddess of the Sea, who enjoys a special place in people’s hearts thanks to the territory’s long maritime history. Many people in Hong Kong still owe their livelihood to the sea and celebrate Tin Hau’s birthday in grand style every year.

According to legend, Tin Hau was born a thousand years ago and was the daughter of a fisherman in China. As a child she had the gift of predicting storms and on one occasion she saved her father’s boat during a fearful storm. Over the years, stories were told about how Tin Hau had saved fishermen from drowning by pulling their boats to shore, and soon temples dedicated to her dotted the coastline.

To celebrate this auspicious occasion, fishermen decorate their boats and gather at Tin Hau temples to pray for fine weather and good catches during the coming year. Every year, fishermen gather for a big celebration at Joss House Bay, and traditional rites are performed at the temple.

Bathing Buddha

Bathing Buddha (浴佛)

Date: 24 May, 2007 (8th day of the fourth month in the Lunar calendar)
Place: Victoria Park, Causeway Bay
Event: Buddha's Birthday, also known as "Buddha Bathing Festival" or "Showering Buddha Festival" (浴佛節, 佛誕)
Equipment: Canon 30D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

According to legend, Prince Siddhatta who was then known as Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini Park, Kapilavatsu in Northern India on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month calendar.

At his birth nine dragons sprayed water to bathe the baby Buddha and seven lotus flowers sprung up beneath his feet as he walked - pointing one hand to the sky and ground, he said "in the heaven above and earth below, I vow to liberate all who suffer in these three realms (天上天下,唯我為尊)".

Bathing Buddha (浴佛)

Today, to commemorate the birth of the Buddha, the bather scoops up water from the ceremonial basin and carefully sprinkles water onto the head and shoulders of the baby Buddha statue, making sure that none spills out of the basin. This action also reminds people to use Buddhism’s teachings to cleanse their minds and bodies.

Bathing Buddha (浴佛)

It has become a public holiday in Hong Kong since 1999.
